Day 7
New Year’s Day
The Kalends of January
Today the old year is officially dead and laid to rest, and the New Year begins in a mood of hopefulness.
At one time, New Year’s Day was a time for wild and unbridled celebrations of life – such as the Feast of Fools and similar festivities. It kicked off the Kalends of January, a time of riotous outpouring of fun and festival.
Even today New Year’s Day is a time of celebration – we watch the parades in the morning, such as the famous Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena; we gather with our friends to feast (and nurse the occasional hangover); and we park ourselves on the couch to root for our favorite college teams as they take on one another in the various football games occurring around the country.
But we should also take a moment of glad remembrance for the old year, and a feeling of gladness that we are still alive! Even though we may not always see any real change in circumstances with the dawn of the New Year, there is always something to be thankful for, if we look deeply enough… and the celebrations that occur on this day are all ones that offer the promise of better days to come.
