New Year’s Day is a good opportunity for practicing divination. Whether it be tarot or runes, tea leaves or crystal balls, now is the time for looking toward the future and whatever it may bring.
My own practice of divination focuses primarily on the use of tarot cards, although on occasion I may also utilize my Crone Stones – special stones imprinted with images based upon aspects of Women’s Spirituality, which are then interpreted accordingly. I have several different tarot decks, but I will likely utilize my favorites – The Sacred Circle deck.
In Scotland, a traditional way of divining the new year stemmed from observing the weather. According to which way the wind blew, the pattern of the months to come was observed. Within many Pagan traditions the winds are assigned their own special colors depending on the direction that they come from… and which direction they blew in from could bring either good news or bad. A Highland weather prediction says:
Wind from the West,
Fish and bread;
Wind from the North,
Cold and flaying;
Wind from the East,
Snow on the hills;
Wind from the South,
Fruit on the trees.
So get out your cards or your runes, or whatever method of divination you prefer to practice, and use today to discover what the New Year holds for you!
I haven’t heard of the crone stones, are they similar to runes? I love tarot cards. Do you have a favorite you use? I have a few for different focuses. My favorites are: Thoth, Rohrig and Haindl.
My favorite and most frequently used deck is the Sacred Circle deck, which you can see in the images in the above post. This is a Celtic-based deck, with a strong Wiccan influence. The images on the cards are quite beautiful, and if you have a love for Ireland, Britain, and/or anything Celtic, you might enjoy this deck. However, I wouldn’t call it a beginner’s deck… it is a little more tricky to work with and while it is “remotely” based on the traditional Waite deck, there is considerable deviation. Several of the cards in the Major Arcana are different, and the interpretations of the Minor Arcana vary from the Waite deck as well.
Other decks that I use include the Aquarian deck, the Voyager deck, and the Robin Wood deck. I have several, but I really only use a handful for divination purposes; the rest are more for bragging rights. I’ve gotten rid of a number of decks in recent years also. At one time I had over fifty, now I am down to around twenty or so. These include traditional tarot cards, and other types of divinatory decks as well.
Crone Stones are somewhat like rune stones, but they use different sorts of images, which are based heavily on the Triple Aspect of the Goddess – Maiden, Mother, and Crone. They are good stones for those individuals with a special interest in Women’s Spirituality.
