MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR SUPPORTING
EQUAL COMMUNICATION ACCESS
Thanks for putting up this list, Osh. This is an excellent opportunity for all people – both deaf and hearing – to start talking about Equal Communication Access and what it means… and what role each and every one of us can play in making ECA a possibility in our own lives and in the lives of those who need such access.
It’s unfortunate that there weren’t more entries… I was really looking forward to reading a lot of different posts on this subject and learning different perspectives on this issue.
However, the posts which are listed here are all excellent and quite thought-provoking, and I want to thank those individuals who did write on this topic.
You can be assured that I will be sharing this link with my family, friends, coworkers, colleagues, and just about everyone on my email list.
It’s too important an issue for us to ignore.
Keep up the good work.
All of these posts were excellent and I enjoyed reading or watching each and every one of them!
However, I must say here and now ~
The Equal Communication Access Poem found on “Ear of my Heart” was truly beautiful. I would encourage everyone to click that link and watch the vlog… which is both signed and captioned. I know it is not eligible for the contest, but it is a beautiful expression of what ECA means.
My college is currently doing Deaf Awareness Week right now, and this is a great way to help promote the whole concept of what the Deaf Community wants, needs, and deserves.
My best wishes to all of the entries… you are all winners in my book!
Where’s mine? I’ll have to post it on my blog when I get in the office this afternoon. This the ongoing ‘scourge’ many deaf people are disavowing all the way to the point to be telling me it’s all in my head.
Richard, you never submitted an entry to the contest. The rules were posted here for everyone to read and follow. I’m sorry if you were not aware of them, but I cannot and will not be held responsible for the fact that your post is not included.
is there a petition that can be signed so that captions can be added to all programs, so the deaf can enjoy tv as well. i”ve watched programs where there are those that spoke another language and they put words under them so english speaking people can understand what is being said, so there should be something for the deaf also
Many television programs are captioned, but not all. You need to make sure that your television has the captioning device (most all TVs nowadays do, as required by law) and also be sure to turn it on.
The big problem with captioning these days is that while it is available for many television programs, it is not always available for internet or digital programming. This is where we need to advocate for such.
I don’t know if there is a petition or not, Birch. What I would suggest is sending letters to the television networks and internet networks (like MSNBC, etc.) and cable companies and the like requesting that they include captioning in their videos and programming and so forth.
If anyone has further information on this, let us know!
Good job, everyone! 🙂
