Here is a wonderful example of a video on Equal Communication Access:
Unfortunately, this video isn’t eligible for our ECA contest, because it was created by the children of one of our judges – these are Barb DiGi’s kids. As you probably know, Barb’s children were involved in the recent DBC demonstration, and they certainly know something about Equal Communication Access! I have no doubt they will be great leaders in the future…they are already proving to be great advocates!
This has gotten me thinking – if these kids can make a top-notch video that explains what Equal Communication Access means to them…
THEN WHAT’S STOPPING YOU???

I agree…this is a great video that really gets the message across.
Simple, but powerful.
Barb should be very proud…and so should the deaf community as a whole.

Awesome video! Educators in oral and mainstreamed schools should view the video. Not to mention the
Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf’s theory
will be debunked at the spot!
Barb’s two children are bright with rich idioms as
depicted in their sign language.
I agree with Tim.
The more we work together, the more powerful the message will be!
Deaf Pundit put a lot of work into the ECA video and the ECA Website. Ocean is doing her share by blogging about ECA even though her posts will not be entered in the contest because she took the lead in coordinating the contest.
Let’s all pull together and build on the work they’ve done!
All entries will be listed on the ECA Website with links to your post on your site.
Once the website has a good collection of entries and the winners to the contest announced, I was thinking along the lines of Jim above, only in sending the link to the ECA Website, not just one video, to my friends, family, etc. – so that they can see many messages about what exactly Equal Communication Access is and why it is important.
Awareness is key!
The average hearing person who has no experience with the Deaf community is simply unaware of the issues. It doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be willing to support ECA – but they need to *understand* it, they need to be made aware of the importance of ECA.
For example, Friday night I was talking with a High School teacher friend of mine over drinks with a few other friends. He mentioned that our local high school was offering Chinese in addition to French and Spanish this coming school year. My response was…”Have they started offering ASL as an elective language yet?”
He asked, “What’s ASL?”
Another gal in our group who has a Deaf friend and knows some basic sign responded, “American Sign Language”.
The teacher replied, “well, no, that is not offered as a class in our school system yet.”
I thought this odd as I know there are Deaf and HOH people in town, but I don’t think we have much, if any, of a Chinese speaking population in town. (Granted we were at a Chinese restaurant in town at the time, and the owners and staff have become very good friends over the years, but they commute from the Boston area to the restaurant – they and their families do not live in town.)
So I took this opportunity to explain to my school teacher friend about the ECA Campaign and followed up with emailing links to the ECA video, my ECA post, and Ocean’s first ECA post.
Again, awareness is key. This particular teacher is a big into advocating for the needs of his students and community…a good place to start with spreading awareness among the general population and gaining local support, for our own Deaf and HOH residents at the very least.
I would like to see the ECA Website packed with these messages that will help bring about awareness, so that I can in turn pass it along to others.
“I’ll tell three friends, then each of them will tell three friends, and each of them will tell three friends….” Let’s get the ball rolling!
So create your own vlog, blog, or video, enter the ECA contest and show your support! Give us your examples, tell us what Equal Communication Access means to you, and/or what happens when ECA is not available (much like Barb’s kids portrayed in this video)! The possibilities are endless!
