I’m curious if anyone has checked out a mobile device called “Ocean” being offered by Helio?
It seems to be a pretty cool little product…somewhat similar to the SideKick, it’s the world’s first dual slider with both a numeric keyboard and a QWERTY keyboard. It also has a built-in two megapixel camera with 4X digital zoom, built-in flash, and video recording, which means you can actually make videos with this thing. It’s also GPS enabled with Google Maps and Buddy Beacon; has an HTML browser; Media Player; Email and Text capabilities; IM Service; Picture and Video Messaging; and loads of memory.
Granted, it’s a bit pricey, but for all you get it seems to be worth it. You can get unlimited service with no additional charges for $65.00 a month. The Ocean device costs $295 for a new member.
Coverage may be a bit problematic…as is common for many of these companies, as you get into the more rural areas, you don’t have the same quality of service.
But overall, this looks to be a pretty nice gadget.
I’m wondering if anyone in the Deaf Community has any familiarity with this company or its products?

Nope – don’t know about it.
WOW!! Will the wonders of technology never cease!! First I have heard or seen of this new device.
Same here, Shoe…I just found out about this device last week while at the Women’s Festival. While nobody there had this particular device, there was a woman who does have one of Helio’s other devices and seems to be quite happy both with the product and the services. I decided to check them out, and this new product seems interesting.
Besides, I kinda like the name! 😉
But $65 a month is still too expensive. I wonder when Helio will come up with their version of TAP plan for the Deaf users.
$65 a month might be too expensive for some folks, but when you consider that you’re getting a highspeed nationwide 3G network; two keyboards including a Qwerty keyboard; email accounts with AOL, Yahoo, Gmail, Earthlink, and Windows (amongst others); AIM, Yahoo and Windows Messenger IM services; Picture Messaging; GPS systems; full HTML browser; click-free web search; Mobile Gaming; MySpace integration; YouTube; 2 MP camera with zoom and flash; and a video camera….
Not to mention unlimited tex messaging, picture messaging, video messaging, web browsing, etc…
I think you’re getting a pretty good deal.
To have a pager, digital camera, and video cam all rolled in one is pretty nice. Granted, the quality might not be as good as having separate components, but it would work for most of my everyday communications.
Compared to the ATT iPhone that everyone is talking about these days, this Ocean device by Helio looks better to me.
Like I said, for some folks it might be expensive. But for those of us who can afford it, this might be worth looking into.
That phone is sweet! And will soon support Exchange? Maybe I can get a new workphone?! (Doubt it.)
But still love my Blackberry –
